Tracing the [feii]/[neii] Ratio and Its Relationship with Other Ism Indicators within Star Forming Dwarf Galaxies: a Spitzer Irs Archival Study
نویسندگان
چکیده
Archival Spitzer observations of 41 starburst galaxies that span a wide range in metallicity reveal for the first time a correlation between the [FeII]/[NeII] 26.0/12.8 μm ratio and the electron gas density as traced by the 18.7/33.4 μm [SIII] ratio, with the [FeII]/[NeII] ratio decreasing with increasing gas density. The correlations of the [FeII]/[NeII] ratio, the PAH peak to continuum strength & metallicity found in an earlier paper were confirmed for a larger sample. We also find a strong correlation between the gas density and the PAH peak to continuum strength. Using shock and photoionization models, we see the driver of the observed [FeII]/[NeII] ratios is metallicity. The majority of [FeII] emission in low metallicity galaxies may be shock-derived, whilst at high metallicity, the [FeII] emission may be instead dominated by contributions from H ii and in particular from dense PDR regions. However, the observed [FeII]/[NeII] ratios may instead be following a metallicity-abundance relationship, with iron being less depleted onto grains in low metallicity galaxies a result that would have profound implications for the use of iron emission lines as unambiguous tracers of shocks. The search for shock - excited H 2 in Virgo spirals experiencing ram pressure stripping
We investigate the presence of shock-excited H2 in four Virgo cluster galaxies that show clear evidence of ongoing ram pressure stripping. Mid-infrared (MIR) spectral mapping of the rotational H2 emission lines were performed using the Infrared Spectrograph (IRS) on board the Spitzer space telescope. We target four regions along the leading side of galaxies where the intracluster medium (ICM) a...

Archival observations of 18 starburst galaxies that span a wide range in metal-licity reveal for the first time a correlation between the ratio of emission line fluxes of [FeII] at 26 µm and [NeII] at 12.8 µm and the 7.7 µm PAH strength, with the [FeII]/[NeII] flux ratio decreasing with increasing PAH strength. We also find a strong correlation between the [FeII]/[NeII] flux ratio and the host ...
متن کاملThe Mid-Infrared Properties of Blue Compact Dwarf Galaxies
The unprecedented sensitivity of the Spitzer Space Telescope has enabled us for the first time to detect a large sample of Blue Compact Dwarf galaxies (BCDs), which are intrinsically faint in the infrared. In the present paper we present a summary of our findings which providing essential information on the presence/absence of the Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbon features in metal-poor environme...
متن کاملMid-infrared Atomic Fine-structure Emission Line Spectra of Luminous Infrared Galaxies: Spitzer/irs Spectra of the Goals Sample
We present the data and our analysis of mid-infrared atomic fine-structure emission lines detected in Spitzer/IRS high-resolution spectra of 202 local Luminous Infrared Galaxies (LIRGS) observed as part of the Great Observatories All-sky LIRG Survey (GOALS). We readily detect emission lines of [SIV], [NeII], [NeV], [NeIII], [SIII]18.7 μm, [OIV], [FeII], [SIII]33.5μm, and [SiII]. More than 75% o...

We present Spitzer observations of the blue compact dwarf galaxy (BCD) Haro 3, with an oxygen abundance of 12+log(O/H)=8.32. These data are part of a larger study of star formation and dust in low-metallicity environments. The IRS spectrum of Haro 3 shows strong narrow Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbon (PAH) emission, with high equivalent widths. Gaseous nebular fine-structure lines are also seen...
